The Southern Lee Cavaliers will face off against the Union Pines Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Southern Lee is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Southern Lee's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Thursday's struggle, when Apex hitters got past them. The Cavaliers came up short against the Cougars on Thursday, falling 12-0. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Cavaliers were not able to get on the board.
Meanwhile, Union Pines had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. Everything went their way against the Bucks as they made off with a 12-1 win.
Union Pines got a great performance from June Thomas as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Thomas also tossed no walks, which is notable because the Vikings are 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-6 otherwise.
At the plate, Willy Rivera was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Union Pines is undefeated when Rivera posts three or more hits, but 3-8 otherwise. Dylan Benedict was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Union Pines always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
This is the second loss in a row for Southern Lee and nudges their season record down to 10-5. As for Union Pines, their victory bumped their record up to 6-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Southern Lee has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Union Pines struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Southern Lee couldn't quite get it done against Union Pines in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 9-4. Can the Cavaliers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
