Xcellent 25 Baseball Rankings: Sumrall back on top

Bobcats finished 2009 high school season ranked No. 1 in the country; move up to top spot in prep Top 25 after Bishop Gorman's two losses in Florida.

Sumrall took nearly three months to rise to the top of the Xcellent 25 National Baseball Rankings in 2009. In 2010 it only took five weeks.

With Bishop Gorman losing twice at the National Grand Slam Tournament in Florida, No. 2 Sumrall moved into the No. 1 spot thanks to a spotless record that included three tournament wins in Florida two weeks ago.

Sumrall also has the matter of a 56-game win streak that is slowly creeping toward the national all-time mark of 68, set by Archbishop Molloy from 1963 to 1966. Two straight state championships also boost the Bobcats' resume.

Sumrall is not the only unbeaten among the top 10 teams, however. Menchville opened its season with five straight wins while Wando is 11-0 and Roswell is 12-0. Germantown Academy also made a big jump to the No. 9 spot after a strong week in Florida. In California, Serra is undefeated and on the rise.



Bishop Gorman also wasn't the only traditional power to suffer a loss last week. Two-time Tennessee state champion Farragut also lost a pair of games while Owasso fell to Lake Wales in a tournament in Florida.

Two teams in the Xcellent 25, Walsh Jesuit and Rocky Mountain, have yet to begin their seasons due to poor weather conditions.

MAXPREPS XCELLENT 25 HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL NATIONAL RANKINGS

1. (2) Sumrall (Miss.), 14-0
The Bobcats continued their winning ways with three victories last week. Luke Lowery struck out 12 in a 4-2 win over St. Patrick (Biloxi, Miss.) early in the week while Chase Lewallen was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a double in an 8-2 win over St. Patrick later in the week. Sumrall also topped Picayune (Miss.) 13-3 with Connor Barron going 3-for-3 with four RBI and Jackson Posey adding two doubles and three RBI. The Bobcats' win streak has reached 56 games in a row.

Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), 0-0
The Warriors had their opener with St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) postponed and will now being their season March 30 vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio).

3. (4) Menchville (Newport News, Va.)
, 5-0
The Monarchs won a close one over Gloucester (Va.), escaping with a 7-6 victory. Menchville then shut out Denbigh (Newport News, Va.) 9-0. Josh Moore was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored while Jeff Gray had two doubles in the Denbigh victory. Deron Hanley hit a two-run homer and Moore also hit one out in the victory over Gloucester.

4. (7) Rocky Mountain (Fort Collins, Colo.), 0-0
Rocky Mountain's season opener against Chaparral (Parker, Colo.) was postoned, as was last week's game with Pomona (Arvada, Colo.). The Lobos head to Arizona this week for the Horizon Tournament.



5. (8) Wando (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), 11-0
Evan Hunt hit home runs in back-to-back games, including a game-tying homer in the fifth inning against Berkeley (Moncks Corner, S.C.) that led to Brad Cherry's RBI groundout in the seventh inning and a 6-5 win that kept Wando unbeaten at 11-0.

6. (9) Roswell (Ga.), 12-0
The Hornets remain ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll after three wins last week, including a 16-0 win over Campbell (Smyrna, Ga.), a 3-2 win against Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) and a 9-2 victory over Walton (Marietta, Ga.).

Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.), 14-1
The Bulldogs topped three opponents by nearly identical scores, beating Trinity Christian Academy (Deltona, Fla.) and Ponte Vedra (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) 11-1 each and Eagle's View (Jacksonville, Fla.) 11-0 in the first game of the St. John's County Tournament. David Perkins continued to hit them out of the park as he had a round-tripper against Trinity Christian and Eagle's View to give him six on the season.

8. (13) Serra (San Mateo, Calif.), 11-0
The Padres won three times including a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.). Tyler Hardeman got the mound win, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Serra also won WCAL games against Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, Calif.) (3-1) and Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif.) (5-2).

9. (23)
Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pa.), 10-0
The Patriots are off to a strong start with 10 straight wins, including seven at the Fort Pierce Tournament in Florida and a 14-2 win over Germantown Friends (Philadelphia). Sean Coyle was 3-for-4 with four RBI against Germantown Friends. The Patriots also dropped Holy Ghost Prep (Bensalem, Pa.) 14-4 and Abington Heights (Clarks Summit, Pa.) 12-2.

10. (5)
Owasso (Okla.), 12-1
The Rams suffered their first loss of the season with a 5-4 defeat on a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh against Lake Wales (Fla.) in Florida. Owasso won its first two games of the tournament, defeating Keys (Park Hill, Okla.) 7-1 and Winter Haven (Fla.) 11-8. Dylan Bundy struck out nine against Winter Haven and pitched five innings of shutout ball.



11. (16) Heritage (Colleyville, Texas), 17-1-1
The Panthers topped Trinity (Euless, Texas) 5-3 and Bell (Hurst, Texas) 6-3 and landed at No. 2 in the most recent Texas Baseball Coaches Association rankings. Austin Kubitza had a home run against Trinity and picked up the pitching win over Bell.

12. (19) Sarasota (Fla.), 11-0
The Sailors head into their own tournament, the Sarasota Classic, undefeated at 11-0 after wins over IMG Academies (Bradenton, Fla.) and St. Petersburg (Fla.) last week. Sarasota defeated St. Petersburg 15-2 in district play with Keith Curcio getting the win. The Sarasota Classic features some of the top teams in the country, including American Heritage, Naples, Lexington Catholic, and Archbishop McCarthy.

13. (NR) Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas), 15-2
The Bobcats were ranked No. 4 in the latest Texas Baseball Coaches Association poll, however they will likely move up since No. 1 Socorro (El Paso, Texas) lost to Americas (El Paso, Texas) last week and Cy Fair has a win over Klein (Texas), which is ranked No. 3.

14. (20) Mesquite (Texas), 16-0
The Skeeters picked up two wins last week, edging De Soto (Texas) 5-4 and White (Dallas, Texas) 10-8. Mesquite is ranked No. 8 in the latest Texas 5A state rankings.

15. (12) Lakewood (Calif.), 12-1
The Lancers fell to Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) in a 1-0 decision despite outhitting the Bruins 9-2 in a Moore League contest. The Lancers rebounded to belt Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) 5-1 in the Redondo Tournament. Hunter Jones homered to spark Lakewood to the win over the Sea Kings.

16. (22) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), 13-1
The Monarchs won four games during the week, handing St. Francis (Mountain View, Calif.) its first loss of the season, 5-4, and defeating Wilson (Portland, Ore.) 4-0. In WCAL play, the Monarchs edged Riordan (San Francisco) 3-2. Mitty also opened the Lion's Tournament on Saturday with a 7-1 win over Scotts Valley (Calif.). Colton Goularte homered in the tournament victory. Alex Balog added a home run in the St. Francis victory.

17. (10) Columbus (Miami, Fla.)
, 14-2
For the second time this year Coral Springs Charter (Fla.) has knocked of one of the top teams in the country. After defeating American Heritage earlier in the season, CSC defeated Columbus last week, 5-4, ending a 10-game win streak for the Explorers.

18. (14) Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 12-1
The Mavericks bashed 15 hits but were unable to match North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.) on the scoreboard and dropped their first game of the season and only their second home game the past two years. Michael Carballo had three hits in the loss and David Vazquez had a home run. The Mavericks play in the Sarasota Tournament this week.

19. (NR) McAllen (Texas), 18-2
The Bulldogs are in the midst of one of their best seasons in many years. McAllen has a win in its own tournament against Calallen (Corpus Christi, Texas) and has also knocked off Sharyland (Mission, Texas).



20. (15) Bellaire (Texas)
, 17-2-1
The Cardinals picked up a pair of District 20-5A victories with wins over Chavez (Houston), 17-0, and Westside (Houston), 6-1. Bellaire (Texas) picked up the win over Westside. Aaron Hafer hit a pair of home runs in an 8-0 win over Houston (Sam) (San Antonio, Texas).

21. (18)
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), 14-1-1
The Patriots tied Miami Christian (Fla.) 10-10 and walloped Brito (Miami, Fla.) 12-2. American Heritage will play in the Sarasota Classic this week. Mike Klement and Nick Travieso both homered against Brito and Miami Christian with Will Nader also adding a round-tripper in the latter game.

22. (24) Rockwall-Heath (Texas), 23-0
The Hawks continue to roll, shutting out Royse City (Texas) 6-0 and Pearce (Richardson, Texas) 10-0 last week in the Jesuit Tournament. They also topped Forney (Texas) 15-5 and will continue tournament play this week. Trevor Holland, Drew Benefield and John Branum all homered against Forney with Benefield, Drew Baxter and Jovan Hernandez belting home runs against Pearce.

23. (NR) Canyon del Oro (Tucson, Ariz.), 15-1
The Dorados have a win over Americas, a team that recently beat defending Texas 5A state champion Socorro which was ranked No. 1 in by the Texas Baseball Coaches Association. Canyon del Oro also has a victory over Yucaipa (Calif.), one of the top teams in Southern California. The Dorados are ranked No. 1 in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A Division I poll.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), 6-2
Traveling East is never easy and the Gaels found that out at the National Grand Slam Classic with a pair of close losses to Palm Beach Central (Wellington, Fla.) (0-2) and American Heritage (Delray Beach, Fla.) (6-7). Bishop Gorman managed to knock off Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) 5-0 and Olympic Heights (Boca Raton, Fla.) 15-2. T.J. White had a strong tournament for the Gaels, batting 6-for-13 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBI.

25. (6)
Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), 10-2
The Admirals suffered their first two losses of the season, falling to Maryville (Tenn.) 4-1 in a district game on March 22 and falling to Bartlett (Tenn.) 6-3 in the finals of the Blackman Invitational. Farragut will play in a tournament in Orlando, Fla., over spring break.
