Preview: Montwood Rams vs. Midland Legacy Rebels
Montwood is 0-4 against Midland Legacy since September of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Montwood Rams will head out on the road to face off against the Midland Legacy Rebels at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Montwood focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up four on Thursday.
Last Thursday, Montwood was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 26-21 to Coronado.
Despite the defeat, Montwood got a solid performance out of Gio Varela, who picked up 146 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Varela is on a roll when it comes to receiving yards, as he's now posted 100 or more in the last three games he's played.
Meanwhile, Midland Legacy waltzed into Friday's contest with two straight wins but they left with three. They walked away with a 32-21 win over Odessa. Given Midland Legacy's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while Odessa is ranked 190th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Midland Legacy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Tommy Johnson iii, who rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown. Madden Milloy and his 104 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Midland Legacy's victory.
With Montwood's loss and Coronado's victory, both teams now sport identical 5-5 records.
Montwood took a serious blow against Midland Legacy in their previous matchup back in December of 2020, falling 66-21. Thankfully for Montwood, Michael Serrano (who threw for 141 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 passes, and also punched in two touchdowns on the ground) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
