Football Recap: Weslaco Takes Down San Benito in a Playoff Battle

Weslaco had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They breezed past the San Benito Greyhounds to the tune of 33-0 on Friday. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by 21 points or more this season.

Weslaco found their leader in sophomore Malachi Rodriguez, who rushed for 108 yards and a pair of scores. Guadalupe Granados was in the mix too, providing the Panthers with two TDs.

Weslaco was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 207 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 154 rushing yards in five consecutive games.

Weslaco's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 4.5 points on average over those games. As for San Benito, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-9.

Looking ahead, Weslaco will face off against Steele at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Panthers 13.8, the Knights 15) so any points scored will be well earned. San Benito does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
