Baseball Recap: Athens Triumphs

Athens never let their opponents score on Tuesday. They walked away with a 4-0 victory over the Stoney Creek Cougars. This was a revenge game for the Red Hawks: when they faced off against the Cougars back in April, they had to take a 4-1 defeat.

The result came thanks to Derek Smith's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Oliver Holmes was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Cermak, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Athens hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Stoney Creek struck out eight times.

The win made it two in a row for Athens and bumps their season record up to 6-11. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 4 runs in those games. As for Stoney Creek, they dropped their record down to 8-18 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Athens will be playing at home against Bishop Foley at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Stoney Creek, they will venture away from home to challenge Adams at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
