League recap: Center Hill climbs in standings with win

5A Region 1 recap September 10, 2013

Center Hill was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from eighth to sixth in 5A Region 1. The Mustangs defeated Byhalia 23-6 earlier in the week.

Oxford took down East Side 37-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Tyler Tollison and Diamante Pounds gave Saltillo a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Tollison threw for 52 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Pounds ran for 242 yards. Tollison also contributed to the rushing game with 73 yards on the ground.

Tollison put up the best numbers in passing as Saltillo defeated Itawamba Agricultural.

Pounds was a beast in the backfield as Pat Byrd's team beat the Indians.

Malek Butler made the biggest impact on defense this week as Center Hill bested the Indians. The 5-foot-6 senior grabbed 2 interceptions.

Pounds was the best running back in the league this week.

D'marius Gillespie was the best receiver in the league this week as Alan Peacock's team topped Byhalia. Gillespie racked up 6 receptions for 77 yards. Kaelin Thomas helped Center Hill's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 34 yards.

Pounds provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Tigers defeated Itawamba Agricultural.

Lake Cormorant's Bailey Walker and Ryan Golden have formed a dream team this season, leading 5A Region 1 in both passing and receiving yards. 6-3 quarterback Walker has thrown for 621 yards this season, while Golden has 13 catches for 349 yards. Pounds from Saltillo leads the league in rushing with 651 yards.

The Tigers made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 1,059 from 1,310. The advance stemmed from a 27-14 victory over the Indians last week.
