Basketball Game Preview: Needville Bluejays vs. Sweeny Bulldogs

Needville and Sweeny are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2016, but not for long. The Needville Bluejays will welcome the Sweeny Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.

Last Tuesday, Needville didn't have quite enough to beat Brazosport and fell 50-47. The Bluejays have struggled against the Exporters recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Bohdan Zeitz, who posted 11 points and four steals. That's the most steals he has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Zachary Lyvers, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 boards.

Even though they lost, Needville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Sweeny was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They took a blow against Wharton, falling 66-38. While the Bulldogs didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Tigers 12-5 in the first quarter.

Clinton King -Varner was Sweeny's leading scorer, having posted eight points. King -Varner also led the team in rebounds with ten.

Needville's loss dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Sweeny, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-18.

Needville came up short against Sweeny in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 54-46. Can Needville avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
