Morse hasn't had much luck against Freeport recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Shipbuilders are taking a road trip to take on the Falcons at 5:00 p.m. Freeport took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Morse, who comes in off a win.
Morse will bounce into Monday's contest after beating Erskine Academy, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Shipbuilders came out on top against the Eagles by a score of 14-9 on Wednesday. The Shipbuilders' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Eli Sommers made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Caden Wells was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Jackson Murray also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Morse was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Freeport was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat dating back to last season. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-6 heartbreaker at the hands of Gardiner.
Ben Bolduc was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Jacob Cass was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Morse's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Freeport, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.
Morse might still be hurting after the 13-4 defeat they got from Freeport in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Shipbuilders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
