Baseball Game Preview: Coxsackie-Athens Riverhawks vs. Watervliet Cannoneers

Coxsackie-Athens is a perfect 4-0 against Watervliet since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Riverhawks will be playing at home against the Cannoneers at 5:00 p.m. Coxsackie-Athens is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.

Coxsackie-Athens came out on top against Maple Hill on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run sixth inning. The Riverhawks put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 15-2 win. The Riverhawks have beaten the Wildcats the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Wildcats has come to flipping the script.

Alex Slater made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, firing off two home runs and six RBI while going 2-for-4. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Andrew Sager was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. CJ VanAlphen was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Meanwhile, Watervliet came up short against Chatham on Monday, falling 11-5. The defeat continues a trend for the Cannoneers in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost six in a row.

Coxsackie-Athens' victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-4. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Watervliet, their loss dropped their record down to 2-9.

Everything went Coxsackie-Athens' way against Watervliet when the teams last played back in April, as Coxsackie-Athens made off with a 16-2 victory. Do the Riverhawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cannoneers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
