Baseball Recap: Salida Wins Going Away Against Meeker

Salida won the last time they faced Meeker and things went their way on Saturday too. Salida blew past Meeker 13-2. That looming 13-2 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Spartans yet this season.

Anthony Taverna made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Taverna was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. That stolen base was his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryus Mattix, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with four RBI and one double. Those RBI were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Bryce Rodrigue, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one double and one RBI.

The win got Salida back to even at 3-3. As for Meeker, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Coming up, Salida will head out on the road to challenge Sand Creek at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Meeker, they will be playing at home against Rangely at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Rangely has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.75 runs per game on average), something Meeker will no doubt try to take advantage of.
