Basketball Game Preview: Greenville Hornets vs. Holmes County Central Jaguars

Greenville hasn't had much luck against Holmes County Central recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Greenville Hornets will take on the Holmes County Central Jaguars in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Tuesday, Greenville ended up a good deal behind Yazoo City and lost 82-64. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Thursday (60), the Hornets still had to take the loss.

Despite the defeat, Greenville got top-tier performance from De'Marion Gibson, who went 8 for 17 on his way to 22 points. The contest was Gibson's 13th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of A'Tavius McChristion, who went 5 of 9 en route to 13 points.

Meanwhile, Holmes County Central beat Forest Hill 56-48 on Thursday. Given the Jaguars' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 47th, while the Patriots are ranked 130th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Holmes County Central pushed their record up to 8-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.5 points per game. As for Greenville, their loss dropped their record down to 10-3.

Greenville was taken down by Holmes County Central 67-34 when the teams last played back in January. That match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Greenville was down 42-20.
