Preview: Greenwich Cardinals vs. Staples Wreckers
Greenwich is on a nine-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Staples is on a eight-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. After each having a week off, the pair will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 10:00 a.m. on November 23rd. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Two weeks ago, Greenwich got themselves on the board against Ridgefield, but Ridgefield never followed suit. They really took it to the Tigers for the full four quarters, racking up a 35-0 victory at home. Given Greenwich's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked sixth, while Ridgefield is ranked 73rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ian Kim was a one-man wrecking crew for Greenwich as he rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per carry. Kim was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 52 yards.
Another reason for the win was Greenwich's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. John Insinga was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.
Even though Staples has not done well against St. Joseph recently (they were 1-6 in their previous seven matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way two weeks ago. Staples took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 49-3 victory over St. Joseph.
Caleb Smith was on fire: he rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 10.8 yards per carry, and also threw for 111 yards and a touchdown. The team also got some help courtesy of Jarrett DeLuca, who rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries.
Their wins bumped Greenwich to 9-0 and Staples to 8-1.
Greenwich and Staples were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, but Greenwich came up empty-handed after a 39-38 defeat.
