Baseball Recap: Independence Now 12-1 over Last 13 Games

After losing to Hickory Flat the last time they met, Independence decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Rebels with a sharp 18-3 victory on Saturday. Considering the Wildcats have won 12 games by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Miller Owens was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was DJ Mitchell, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Independence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hickory Flat only posted an OBP of .333.

Independence has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Hickory Flat, their defeat was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-20.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Independence will square off against White Station at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season. As for Hickory Flat, they will face off against Ingomar at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
