Preview: Benton Rangers vs. Mt. Vernon Rams

Benton is 2-8 against Mt. Vernon since May of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Benton Rangers will head out on the road to take on the Mt. Vernon Rams at 4:30 p.m. Benton will be strutting in after a victory while Mt. Vernon will be coming in after a defeat.

On Saturday, Benton beat Marshall County 8-4. The win was just what Benton needed coming off of a 16-6 loss in their prior contest.

Collin Hill spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, Evan Munoz was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Isaac Billington was another key contributor, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Mt. Vernon were a bit more limited in their game on Saturday. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Effingham. Mt. Vernon has not had much luck with Effingham recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.

Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew McKinney, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Benton's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.

Benton came up short against Mt. Vernon in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, falling 6-3. Can Benton avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
