Meanwhile, Commerce had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.5 points) and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They claimed a resounding 71-6 win over the Wildcats. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won four games by 38 points or more so far this season.
Mount Vernon better keep an eye on Aidan Brown. He was instrumental in Commerce's win, rushing for 161 yards and three TDs on only 13 carries, while also throwing for 315 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 14.3 yards per attempt. The dominant performance also gave Brown a new career-high in passer rating (124.1). Malik Garcia was another key player, picking up 162 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Commerce proved: they limited Rains to a paltry 1.6 yards per carry. The team can thank Brandon Anderson Jr for the heroic effort on defense: he. Commerce didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 11.5.
Commerce didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Garcia and Xzavier Hassell. Hassell got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Commerce's record now sits at 7-1. As for Mount Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Mount Vernon has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 268.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Commerce struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 294.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Mount Vernon was dealt a bruising 55-6 loss at the hands of Commerce in their previous matchup back in November of 2024. Can Mount Vernon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
