John Carroll Catholic has gone a perfect 6-0 against Cardinal Newman recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Rams will face off against the Crusaders at 4:30 p.m. John Carroll Catholic is coming into the game hot, having won their last ten games.
John Carroll Catholic came out on top against Moore Haven on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run sixth inning. The Rams put the hurt on the Terriers with a sharp 7-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Rams, who have now won 12 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Makayla Ortiz made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 21 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Malory Vaudrin was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one triple. Samantha Rychter was another key player, earning two RBI, one run, and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Cardinal Newman walked away with it. They were the clear victors by a 16-1 margin over the Greyhounds on Monday. The Crusaders' offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.
Elle Perrotto was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sydney Mahoney, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Cardinal Newman was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .478. They are 6-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
John Carroll Catholic's win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Cardinal Newman, they moved to 6-16 with that win, which also ended their four-game losing streak.
Cardinal Newman's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. John Carroll Catholic has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Cardinal Newman, though, as they've been averaging only 2.1 strikeouts. Will John Carroll Catholic keep running through batters, or will the Crusaders buck the trend?
