Softball Recap: Walnut Wins Going Away Against Pine Grove

Walnut made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Pine Grove, but still couldn't quite topple them. The Walnut Wildcats blew past the Pine Grove Panthers 12-2 on Thursday. Considering the Wildcats' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

Brittan Dawkins made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.

In other batting news, Walnut let Baylee Spight and Maddie Wilburn run wild. Spight scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Wilburn went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. What's more, Spight posted two hits, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Addison Hicks, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Walnut always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pine Grove only posted an OBP of .200.

The win got Walnut back to even at 2-2. As for Pine Grove, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Wildcats challenge the Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Pine Grove, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Hickory Flat at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Pine Grove is facing Hickory Flat at the right time seeing as Hickory Flat is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
