Softball Recap: Winchester Takes a Loss

Winchester extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 5-10 in the process. They fell 9-4 to the Arlington Spy Ponders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spy Ponders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-5 back in April.

Carys Gugliotta was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and two runs. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last four times she's played. Ella Centurelli was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

As for Arlington, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games.

On Arlington's side, Soline Fisher made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). Fisher was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zanna Felton-Quinn, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Mackenzie Kuklentz, who went 1-for-2 with one home run.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Winchester will square off against Cambridge Rindge & Latin at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Red & Black are facing the Falcons at the right time seeing as the Falcons are stuck on an 11-game losing streak. As for Arlington, they will face off against Billerica Memorial at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
