No. 1 Mater Dei, No. 2 St. John Bosco in action as Trinity League play begins while Clovis East battles Clovis North in Central Section showdown.

Play begins this week in the Trinity League, annually one of the toughest high school football leagues in the country.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) hosts Servite (Anaheim) and No. 8 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) hosts No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) in two marquee Trinity League clashes.

The top-ranked Monarchs are back from the East Coast after a gutty, defensive-minded 20-7 win over St. Frances Academy (Baltimore). In the win, Nasir Wyatt and Chuck McDonald III each scored defensive touchdowns as the top-ranked Monarchs dominated on that side of the ball. They forced four turnovers and limited the Panthers to 141 total yards.

Servite enters the contest 4-1 with its lone stumble a 34-31 loss to Rancho Cucamonga.

St. John Bosco, coming off a bye after falling 30-23 to Kahuku (Hawaii), looks to rebound against 4-1 Santa Margarita, whose lone loss was to No. 4 Centennial (Corona).

No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) entered the MaxPreps Top 25 national rankings last week after a 63-6 thrashing of Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The Trailblazers take their 5-0 record into a league showdown against Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks).

A Central Section showdown pits No. 12 Clovis North (Fresno) against No. 21 Clovis East (Clovis) with both teams entering at 5-0. Clovis North is led by junior running back Jackson Cinfel, who has 726 yards rushing and eight scores. Clovis East quarterback Tyus Miller has thrown for 1,395 yards and 18 scores.
