Softball Game Preview: Oxford Chargers vs. Pontotoc Warriors

Oxford hasn't had much luck against Pontotoc recently, but that could start to change on Monday. Oxford will square off against Pontotoc at 6:30 p.m.

Oxford managed to slip by St. Benedict at Auburndale the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. Oxford came up short against St. Benedict at Auburndale on Friday, falling 10-2.

Oxford saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jayla Dukes, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Itawamba Agricultural typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday Pontotoc proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top against the Indians by a score of 9-5. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Warriors.

Mattie Sims Koon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kelsy Spears, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Madi Collums, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Pontotoc kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Oxford now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Pontotoc, their record now sits at 9-3.

Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Oxford hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .381. However, it's not like Pontotoc struggles in that department as they've averaged .324. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Oxford suffered a grim 7-0 defeat to Pontotoc when the teams last played on March 3rd. Can Oxford avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
