Evangel Christian is 10-0 against East Central HomeSchool since February of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Evangel Christian Lightning will venture away from home to square off against the East Central HomeSchool Patriots at 6:00 p.m. Evangel Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past six matches -- so hopefully East Central HomeSchool likes a good challenge.
Evangel Christian is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Mt. Pleasant Christian: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Evangel Christian blew Mt. Pleasant Christian out of the water with a 76-37 final score. The Lightning have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 games by 29 points or more this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Evangel Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Asa Wagoner, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 12 points and five rebounds. Michael Gobel was another key player, going 5 for 9 en route to 13 points.
Evangel Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in nine consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, East Central HomeSchool waltzed into their contest last Thursday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They walked away with a 63-55 win over the Warriors. Given the Patriots' advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 171st, while the Warriors are ranked 378th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Evangel Christian better keep an eye on Jack Taylor. He was instrumental in East Central HomeSchool's win, dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten boards. Those 16 points gave Taylor a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Asher King, who posted nine points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
East Central HomeSchool's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-6. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.0 points per game. As for Evangel Christian, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-4 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Evangel Christian has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 34.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like East Central HomeSchool struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.5 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Evangel Christian didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against East Central HomeSchool in their previous meeting back in January, but they still walked away with a 44-39 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Evangel Christian since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
