Basketball Recap: Sanderson Spartans vs. Broughton Capitals
Sanderson was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 17th straight loss dating back to last season. They were dealt a 59-17 defeat at the hands of the Broughton Capitals. The Spartans lost against the Capitals in their previous head to head back in February of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 46-33 score last time.
Stella Puckett and Devon Whitluck certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Puckett posted seven points and four steals, while Whitluck earned six points. Hannah Sayre was another key player, putting up two points and five boards.
Leading Broughton to victory were Jamiyah Allen and Kyra Gustus. Allen dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Gustus had ten points along with eight boards and four steals. Allen is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Walpole, who scored ten points.
Sanderson's loss dropped their record down to 0-13. As for Broughton, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season.
Sanderson didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 69-25 defeat against Leesville Road on the 24th. Broughton has also already played their next contest, a 48-17 win against Enloe on the 24th.
