Recap: Monticello Mustangs vs. Orange County Fighting Hornets
The Monticello Mustangs were the 58-51 winner over the Orange County Fighting Hornets when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Monticello took a 50-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Fighting Hornets on Monday. Monticello has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Valerie Swanson, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Wood, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Leading Orange County to victory were Laney Fayard and Janiyah Hackley. Fayard dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds, while Hackley scored 14 points along with six steals. Fayard has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Chloe Hebert, who scored five points along with ten rebounds.
Monticello has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-7 record this season. As for Orange County, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-5.
Monticello will be playing at home against the Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Louisa County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 315th, while the Mustangs are ranked 147th). As for Orange County, they will head out on the road to square off against the Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Western Albemarle is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
