Softball Recap: Wickliffe Extends Winning Streak to Three

Wickliffe had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 22-run drubbing they dealt Cardinal on Wednesday. The Blue Devils never let the Huskies get on the board and left with a 22-0 win. Considering the Blue Devils have won four matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Leigha Blazetic was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, Wickliffe got a massive performance out of Mackayla Gazdak, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. That stolen base was Gazdak's first of the season. Another player making a difference was Lorelai Nichols, who scored three runs while going 4-for-4.

Wickliffe always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .744. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cardinal only posted an OBP of .176.

The victory (which was Wickliffe's third in a row) raised their record to 5-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Cardinal, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 4-4.

Coming up, Wickliffe will head out to take on West Geauga at 5:00 p.m. on the 24th. As for Cardinal, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Kenston at 4:30 p.m.
