Top 10 wildest state football finals

The 2010 high school football season is complete with state champions crowned from coast to coast. A number of state finals produced high-scoring, record-setting performances, some of which produced eye-popping numbers that were beyond belief. Here's MaxPreps' look at the Top 10 Wildest State Championship Games.

10. Soldotna (Alaska) 77, Kenai Central (Alaska) 42
The first state championship game of the 2010 school year also produced the most points by a winning team as Soldotna rambled for 641 yards rushing to defeat Kenai Central 77-42 in the Alaska Small Schools state championship in October. The game included 11 runs of more than 30 yards by Soldotna. Auston Tennis led the way with 281 yards and four touchdowns on just 15 carries while Phil Bennett had 208 yards and two scores on 12 carries and Robbie Smithwick had 98 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries. The two teams combined for 1,098 yards of total offense. Kenai quarterback Colton Hayes completed 19 of 33 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns while receiver A.J. Hull caught nine passes for 164 yards and three scores.

9. North Tama (Traer, Iowa) 43, Madrid (Iowa) 34
North Tama won the Iowa 1A state championship by overcoming a 20-point deficit thanks to an incredible performance by quarterback Brendon Boerm. Besides rushing for 104 yards on 19 carries, Boerm also caught three passes for 112 yards and completed 12 of 26 passes for 174 yards. In the fourth quarter, Boerm engineered three scoring drives as he threw a 13-yard touchdown pass, caught a 52-yard touchdown pass and scored the clinching touchdown on a 13-yard run. Boerm accounted for six touchdowns on the day - two passing, two rushing and two receiving. Madrid finished with plenty of offense of its own as it gained 374 yards on the ground and 79 through the air for a total of 453 yards.

8. Riverheads (Staunton, Va.) 63, Eastern Montgomery (Elliston, Va.) 49
Eastern Montgomery was one win shy of the greatest season in school history and it scored seven touchdowns in the Virginia Group A Division 1 championship game. But it was not enough. Riverheads racked up a playoff record 560 yards rushing to win its first state title in 10 years. Three Riverheads running backs gained more than 100 yards including Daniel Weekley (19-216, 3 touchdowns), Logan Moore (23-158, 2 touchdowns) and Jordan Jack (20-124, 3 touchdowns). The Gladiators rolled up 594 total yards, a Group A postseason mark, as well as 27 first downs, also a record. Eastern Montgomery's Shawn Christian wasn't too shabby himself, completing 19 of 28 passes for a playoff record 429 yards and five touchdowns. Receiver Brad Wooten caught 13 of those passes for 295 yards.

7. Maple Heights (Ohio) 45, Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) 33
Maple Heights won its first state championship of any kind since 1974 by overcoming a 19-point deficit against Trotwood-Madison in the Ohio Division II state championship game. Shaquille Washington accounted for seven touchdowns for the Mustangs as he ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 216 yards and two scores. Trotwood-Madison got a big effort from Marcus Graham, who rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns and also threw a pair of touchdown passes. He guided them to a 32-13 lead only to have Washington lead the Maple Heights comeback.

6. Highland (Salt Lake City) 37, Mountain Crest (Hyrum, Utah) 36
Highland got the win in the Utah Class 4A state championship game by stopping Mountain Crest's two-point conversion try in double overtime for its first state title in 24 years. Highland trailed late in the game, but it tied the score on a Nate Fakahafua 43-yard touchdown catch with 47 seconds left in the game. Fakahafua came up big in the first overtime, grabbing a 25-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to keep Highland's title hopes alive. Fakahafua then teamed with Thomas Conner to stop Mountain Crest's two-point conversion. Fakahafua caught 10 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns while Highland quarterback Anthony Smithson completed 14 of 21 passes for 250 yards. Mountain Crest quarterback Alex Kuresa was equal to the task as he completed 23 of 38 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns.

5. Trinity Catholic (Ocala, Fla.) 56, University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 55
Trinity Catholic needed three overtimes to finally defeat University 56-55 in the Florida 2B state championship game. The 111 total points set a scoring record for a Florida state championship game. Jeremiah Gates came up big for Trinity Catholic, gaining 188 yards on 33 carries with five touchdowns. Quarterback Joseph Little also threw for 179 yards and three scores. University stayed in the game thanks to the arm of Doug Cooke, who set a championship game record for completions and attempts by going 43 of 61 for 430 yards and four touchdowns.

4. Aledo (Texas) 69, La Marque (Texas) 34
This one was actually close for three quarters until Aledo scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to put La Marque away in the Texas 4A Division II state championship game. Johnathan Gray came up huge for the Bearcats as he rushed 29 times for 320 yards and eight touchdowns. His eight scores allowed him to surpass Texas legend Ken Hall on the single season rushing touchdowns list. Gray finished the year with 59 touchdowns to break Hall's mark of 57. The two teams put up surprisingly similar numbers as Aledo had 588 yards to La Marque's 563. Aledo also received 209 yards passing from Matthew Bishop while La Marque quarterback Emanuell Williams completed 20 of 31 passes for 254 yards and Tim Wright rushed 22 times for 202 yards.

3. Shiloh Christian (Springdale, Ark.) 61, Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.) 40
Shiloh Christian won its third straight Arkansas 4A state championship, defeating Pulaski Academy in a predictably high-scoring affair. Two of the most prolific offenses in the nation didn't disappoint as Shiloh Christian quarterback Kiehl Frazier accounted for seven touchdowns and was named the championship game MVP for the third season in a row. Frazier completed 15 of 25 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns and he also ran for 52 yards and three more scores. Zann Jones caught four passes for 202 yards and three scores. His career touchdown total of 57 touchdowns set an Arkansas state record. The two teams combined for 994 yards of total offense with Pulaski Academy quarterback Fredi Knighten completing 24 of 46 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 79 yards and a score. Receiver Garrett Lamb caught eight of those passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns.

2. Mayfield (Las Cruces, N.M.) 69, Manzano (Albuquerque, N.M.) 42
Manzano certainly had enough offense to win the New Mexico 5A state championship game as it got 465 yards passing (27 of 41) and five touchdowns from Ryan Trujillo and 14 catches for 321 yards and four scores from receiver Josh Bowen. In fact Manzano had 573 yards of total offense. However, Mayfield compiled an incredible 731 yards (490 rushing, 241 passing) as the two teams combined for 1,304 yards of total offense. Mayfield had three running backs gain more than 100 yards, including Brandon Betancourt with 220 yards and three touchdowns, Ricky Milks with 131 yards and two scores and Keifer Payne with 101 yards and one touchdown. Payne also caught six passes for 212 yards. Mayfield quarterback Axten Franzoy completed 8 of 10 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns. The 111 combined points set a state record for points in a championship game.

1. Union (Tulsa, Okla.) 50, Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) 47
It figures that one of the greatest rivalries in the country would put on one of the best championship games in 2010. Union won its third straight Oklahoma 6A state championship game against Jenks, utilizing a trick play - a pass by wide receiver Stephon Weaver - for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. Union trailed 21-3 in the first quarter, but the Redskins rallied to within four points by halftime, 27-23, and took the lead in the third quarter, 37-33. Kale Pearson completed 20 of 25 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for 86 yards and three scores. Union receiver Christian Hood caught six passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner from Weaver.
