Softball Game Preview: Mark Keppel Aztecs vs. Gabrielino Eagles

The Mark Keppel Aztecs will challenge the Gabrielino Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Mark Keppel took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Garfield a 10-0 shutout. With that win, the Aztecs brought their scoring average up to 6.6 runs per game.

Robyn Guitron made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only a hit while striking out eight over six innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one double. What's more, she posted three hits, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Maddie Quach was a standout: she scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Jasmyne ( Prex ) Barraza was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.

Mark Keppel always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .564. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Gabrielino came up short against Nogales on Friday and fell 23-20. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Wednesday (18), the Eagles still had to take the loss.

Mark Keppel pushed their record up to 3-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Gabrielino, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Mark Keppel took their win against Gabrielino in their previous matchup back in March of 2022 by a conclusive 10-0. Will Mark Keppel repeat their success, or does Gabrielino have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
