Basketball Recap: Southmont Triumphs

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Southmont walked away with it. They secured a 48-44 W over the North Putnam Cougars on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mounties.

Southmont found their leader in sophomore Layla Gomez, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine boards. Gomez has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Barry, who posted 12 points.

North Putnam's loss came despite strong showings from Rose Haste and Melanie Davies. Haste shot 5-for-9 from deep and dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 boards, while Davies dropped a double-double on 17 points and 13 rebounds. Davies has become a key player for North Putnam: the team is 7-3 when she posts at least eight boards, but 5-8 otherwise.

The win got Southmont back to even at 11-11. As for North Putnam, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-11 record this season.

Southmont wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 66-44 victory against Greencastle on the 7th. North Putnam does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
