Baseball Recap: Gateway Gators vs. San Francisco Waldorf Wolverines
Gateway extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-12 in the process. They lost 14-4 to the San Francisco Waldorf Wolverines. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wolverines this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-2 on Tuesday.
Gateway saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Henry Boyle, who went 1-for-2 with four stolen bases and one run. Diego Tatum also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
As for San Francisco Waldorf, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-8 record this season. The result was nothing new for San Francisco Waldorf, who have now won four contests by eight runs or more so far this season.
On San Francisco Waldorf's side, Sam Appel made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out 11 batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Appel has posted since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of San Francisco Waldorf's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 2-8 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Emiliano Martinez-Ortiz was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Luciano Girouard, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
As of now, neither Gateway nor San Francisco Waldorf have any future games scheduled.
