Basketball Preview: Barnwell Warhorses vs. Hampton County Hurricanes

Barnwell is 1-9 against the Hurricanes since December of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Barnwell Warhorses will head out on the road to square off against the Hampton County Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. Barnwell will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps South Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 247th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 54th).

On Monday, Barnwell suffered a tough 54-34 defeat at the hands of the Wolverines. Barnwell has struggled against the Wolverines recently, as their contest on Monday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Vashahd Scofield, who scored 13 points. That was a full 38.2% of Barnwell's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Damahjai Devoe, who scored nine points.

Meanwhile, Hampton County came tearing into Friday's game with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.6 points) and they left with even more momentum. They secured a 76-70 W over Woodland. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

Kavon Chisolm was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. He is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last seven games he's played. Another player making a difference was Xaviar Garvin, who scored ten points along with six rebounds.

Barnwell has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. As for Hampton County, their victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-5.

Barnwell suffered a grim 71-47 defeat to the Hurricanes in their previous meeting two weeks ago. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Chisolm, who almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds. Now that Barnwell knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
