Baseball Recap: Dos Palos Takes a Loss

Dos Palos had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 10-12-1 to make it four. They fell just short of the Mendota Aztecs by a score of 4-3. The Broncos were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Aztecs earlier this season, when they won 8-6.

Chaz Merrell was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Dos Palos: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 8-11-1 otherwise.

Merrell wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gilbert Ramirez, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Kevin Larra also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

As for Mendota, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-10. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games.

On Mendota's side, the team relied heavily on Paul Ochoa, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. That's the most doubles Ochoa has posted since back in February. Cesar Mercado was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

Dos Palos wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 16-2 victory against Tranquillity on the 6th. As for Mendota, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 10-5 defeat against Coalinga on the 6th.
