2A/1A Western Highlands recap Oct. 9, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Thomas Jefferson Academy, who took down 197th ranked Thomas Jefferson Academy, 54-36. Trevor Robinson ran for 111 yards in the win.
McKinnon "Mac" Martin and Efrim Borders provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Mountain Heritage. The connection was good for 73 yards, the longest such play in 2A/1A Western Highlands this season.
The Gryphons' dynamic duo of Martin and Borders proved tough for the Cougars to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Martin threw for 300 yards and one touchdown and Borders had 180 yards receiving. Joseph Bradshaw helped Thomas Jefferson Academy's passing attack out by catching four balls for 40 yards.
Desean Jackson was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 282 yards on 14 carries as Hendersonville fell to Mountain Heritage. Dj Wilson also contributed to the rushing game with 45 yards on the ground.
Thanks to the talents of Grant Rivers and Jackson the Bearcats have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Rivers leads the league in passing with 1394 yards, while Jackson has rushed for 1196 yards this season. Jerry Cash's team's Borders leads the league in receiving yards with 604 on 36 catches.
The Gryphons' Martin needs only 93 yards against Polk County next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 140 carries Martin has accumulated 907 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Owen takes on Hendersonville. As it stands, the Warhorses are in fifth, while Bj Laughter's team is in second.
The Bearcats extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Western Highlands this week by beating Mitchell, 56-16. The victory was the fifth in a row for Hendersonville.
