Baseball Recap: River Valley Panthers vs. West Shamokin Wolves

After flying high against Penns Manor on Friday, River Valley came back down to earth. The Panthers came up short against the West Shamokin Wolves on Wednesday, falling 15-4. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wolves apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Gavin Burkhart was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one double.

Burkhart wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sammy Yanits, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Braden Baker also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

River Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 6-12. As for West Shamokin, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

While River Valley had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
