South River (4A-3A), Hereford (3A-2A) and Pikesville (2A-1A) earned public school lacrosse titles over the weekend on the boys' side, while Severna Park (4A-3A), Fallston (3A-2A) and Century (2A-1A) did the same on the girls' side. Below is a quick glance at championship game scores, followed by short capsules on each game;

4A-3A Boys: South River 11, Urbana 6

3A-2A Boys: Hereford 13, Centennial 8

2A-1A Boys: Pikesville 6, Queen Anne's County 5

4A-3A Girls: Severna Park 7, Westminster 5

3A-2A Girls: Fallston 16, Mount Hebron 1

2A-1A Girls: Century 25, Patterson Mill 9

4A-3A Boys: South River 11, Urbana 6

Senior midfielder Matt Gregoire scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to lead South River to an 11-6 victory over Urbana and capture the school’s first 4A-3A state title.

The Seahawks, trailing 6-5 at the half, scored five consecutive goals in the third quarter, including three by Gregoire, to take a commanding lead they would never give up.

Senior attackman Alex Carros chipped in with three goals and an assist, while Drew Lee added a goal and an assist for South River (18-1).

3A-2A Boys: Hereford 13, Centennial 8

Hereford’s 12th-consecutive win, a 13-8 victory over Centennial, gave the Bulls their second-consecutive 3A-2A state championship and fifth overall.

Nick Pompa led Hereford (19-1) with four goals and Rustin Bryant added three. Goalie Adam Green recorded eight saves.

Shane Jaeger and Alex Danner each had two goals for Centennial (15-4).

2A-1A Boys: Pikesville 6, Queen Anne's County 5

Pikesville entered the 2A-1A boys lacrosse championship game having already pulled off what many considered to be the upset of the year, defeating two-time state champion Glenelg. But the Panthers were determined to win one more big game, and did so riding senior goalie Erick Zarzecki’s 17 saves to a 6-5 win over Queen Anne’s County.

Senior midfielder Jordan Parker and junior attackman Alfonzo Timmons each scored twice to lead the Panthers, who finished the season with a 15-3 record while winning the school’s third state championship.

Queen Anne’s (12-4) scored three straight goals late in the game to pull within one with 57 seconds left, but Zarzecki turned away several last-minute desperation shots to preserve the win for Pikesville.

“I was in the zone,” Zarzecki told the Baltimore Sun. “There’s still a lot of pressure and I was still nervous, but I got the job done.”

4A-3A Girls: Severna Park 7, Westminster 5

Goalie Sarah Lloyd made 10 saves to anchor a stingy Falcons defense as Severna Park won its third straight state championship with a 7-5 victory over Westminster.

Anna Patterson scored the game-winning goal with just under 15 minutes to play and the Falcons (16-3) held the Owls (16-2) scoreless the rest of the way to win the title.

3A-2A Girls: Fallston 16, Mount Hebron 1

The Fallston Cougars led by 10 goals just 17 minutes into the game and easily cruised to a 16-1 rout of Mount Hebron in the 3A-2A championship game.

Fallston goalie Kelsey Evans had eight saves as the Cougars’ defense held Mount Hebron’s Ashley Bruns to just one assist. Bruns entered the game with 103 goals and 62 assists.

Jenn Ward led Fallston with five goals.

2A-1A Girls: Century 25, Patterson Mill 9

Century set state title-game records for goals scored, individual goals scored and individual assists tallied in its 25-9 drubbing of Patterson Mill in the 2A-1A state title game.

Maryland-bound Katie Schwarzmann set a new state title-game record with nine goals and Hofstra-bound Claire Brady dished out a record seven assists to go along with her four goals in leading Century to the historic win.

Schwarzmann scored her 300th career goal during the game — assisted by Brady — and finished with a Carroll County-record 307 goals.

Baseball: River Hill wins 2A crown

Junior centerfielder Christian Laidley drove in Jeff Crosswhite with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give River Hill a 3-2 victory over Eastern Tech, capturing the school’s first state championship.

Crosswhite earned the win for the Hawks, while Donnie Guido suffered the loss despite giving up just six hits.

Baseball: Bohemia Manor wins 1A

Bohemia Manor pitcher Madison Neddo hurled a two-hit shutout to lead Bohemia Manor to its first state title with a 6-0 victory over Catoctin.

The Eagles pounded out 13 hits to help give Neddo a perfect 10-0 record on the season.

Baseball: Lutheran wins MIAA B championship

Senior Billy Seymour pitched a one-hit shutout and was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Lutheran to a 3-0 victory over Friends in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship game, held at Ripken Stadium.

After escaping a first inning bases-loaded jam created by two walks and an error, Seymour cruised, giving up only a two-out single in the fourth inning.

The championship was the first for Lutheran coach Paul Schildwachter and the school’s second, the other coming in 1994.

"I've been very blessed to have these kids," Schildwachter told the Baltimore Sun. "They did a great job all season, and it'll be hard next year when some of them aren't around."
