The Fairfax Christian Cardinals are taking a road trip to take on the Riverdale Baptist Crusaders at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Fairfax Christian is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 69.7 points per game this season.
Last Friday, Fairfax Christian ended up a good deal behind St. John's and lost 64-50. The Cardinals were down 57-36 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Despite the loss, Fairfax Christian had strong showings from Messiah Dixon, who went 5-for-12 on his way to 14 points in addition to seven steals and six assists, and Frank Siaca Bey, who went 8-for-13 en route to 18 points and seven rebounds. That's the most steals Dixon has posted since back in January. Willie Bennett was another key player, putting up six points.
Even though they lost, Fairfax Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in 26 consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Riverdale Baptist faced Clinton Grace Christian in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. Riverdale Baptist fell 76-66 to Clinton Grace Christian. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Thursday (64), the Crusaders still had to take the loss.
Fairfax Christian will have to contain Cannon Greene as he made an impact in Riverdale Baptist's last game. He went 6-for-11 to rack up 26 points and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacoby Briscoe, who earned 14 points.
Riverdale Baptist's defeat dropped their record down to 20-9. As for Fairfax Christian, their loss dropped their record down to 19-11.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Fairfax Christian has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Riverdale Baptist struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.8 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Fairfax Christian came up short against Riverdale Baptist in their previous meeting back in January, falling 62-57. Can Fairfax Christian avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
