Softball Game Preview: St. Joseph Wildcats vs. Mainland Regional Mustangs

St. Joseph has gone a perfect 4-0 against Mainland Regional recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Wildcats will host the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. St. Joseph's pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so Mainland Regional's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

St. Joseph's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They put the hurt on Absegami with a sharp 7-0 win. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by seven runs or more this season.

Elaina Portalatin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Alaina Dorsey was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Riley Hunter was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

Meanwhile, Mainland Regional had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They had just enough and edged out Oakcrest 3-2 on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since May 30, 2024.

St. Joseph is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Mainland Regional, they picked up their first road victory, bumping their record up to 2-8.

Everything went St. Joseph's way against Mainland Regional in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as St. Joseph made off with a 9-1 win. Do the Wildcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
