Basketball Game Preview: Varina Blue Devils vs. Highland Springs Springers

Varina is 0-10 against Highland Springs since February of 2018 but things could change on Friday. The Varina Blue Devils will venture away from home to challenge the Highland Springs Springers at 6:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, Varina lost to Mechanicsville at home by a 62-46 margin. The Blue Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the loss, Varina had strong showings from Solai Coleman, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards, and Kya Ingram, who went 5 of 9 en route to 12 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. Coleman is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last seven games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaliyah Straughter, who posted four points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Varina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in eight consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, the third road contest was the charm for Highland Springs, as they earned their first road win of the season. They snuck past Hanover with a 56-50 victory on Tuesday.

Highland Springs has also been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.2 points per game. As for Varina, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-6.

Varina was dealt a bruising 89-14 loss at the hands of Highland Springs in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Can Varina avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
