Football Game Preview: Vernon Lions vs. Peaster Greyhounds

The Vernon Lions will challenge the Peaster Greyhounds at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Vernon is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 41-16 margin over Denver City. The Lions pushed the score to 38-0 by the end of the third, a deficit the Mustangs cut but never quite recovered from.

Tru Gipson was the offensive standout of the game as he rushed for 64 yards and one TD. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in November of 2024.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 305 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 172 rushing yards in ten consecutive contests.

Vernon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Jamari Chance was the real danger to the passing game, picking up two interceptions all by himself. Adrain Felton was another major factor on D, picking up two sacks, forcing one fumble, and making ten total tackles (5.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, Peaster waltzed into their matchup on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Their defense stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 16-0 shutout. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Greyhounds' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 67th, while the Mustangs are ranked 255th).

The critical scores for Peaster came from Cade McCollough and Kaden Albert.

Vernon's record is now 10-2. As for Peaster, their record now sits at 11-1.

Vernon took a serious blow against Peaster in their previous matchup on November 7th, falling 39-3. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Lions were down 32-3.
