Portola had lost six straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 4-14 to make it seven. They came up short against the University Trojans, falling 14-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Trojans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 on April 9th.
Portola saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Irene Kim, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one double. That double marked the first that Kim has hit this season.
As for University, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-9. Considering they have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
On University's side, Carson Cruz - Babson and Maiko Shiraiwa made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Cruz - Babson struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Shiraiwa pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, she posted three strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. At the plate, Cruz - Babson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Shiraiwa went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Sophia Weinberg - Harvard was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sienna Gillen, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Portola will host Irvine at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Vaqueros have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.56 runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for University, they will be playing at home against Woodbridge at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.17 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
