Volleyball Recap: Mt. Vernon Takes Down Ranked St. Edward

Mt. Vernon faced St. Edward in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Yellowjackets narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Eagles 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Yellowjackets have posted since April 4th.

Mt. Vernon was actually outscored in aggregate across those five sets (108-104), but they still managed to win. The match finished with set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 18-25, 15-13.

Hunter Thompson paced Mt. Vernon's offense, picking up 16 kills. Thompson got some help from Isaiah Campbell and his 50 assists. Zach Black controlled things from the service line, finishing with two aces.

When it comes to explaining why St. Edward lost, don't look at Michael Gall. Despite the final result, he had 11 kills and ten digs. Gall has been hot for a while, having also posted 12 or more assists the last 17 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Zach Libertosky, who had 21 digs.

Mt. Vernon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-10 record this season. As for St. Edward, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-7.

Mt. Vernon does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for St. Edward, they have already played their next matchup, a 3-2 win against Upper Arlington on the 3rd.
