Priest River gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They came out on top against the St. Maries Lumberjacks by a score of 8-3. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Spartans as it put an end to their 19-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Jacob Best made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Best was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Colton Kuprienko was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. Layton Goins was another key player, scoring a run and stealing Three bases. while going 2-for-3.
Coincidentally, Priest River and St. Maries will both be playing Orofino the next time they take the field. Priest River will head out to face Orofino at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while St. Maries will host them at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
