Softball Game Preview: Fulton Steamers vs. Mercer County Golden Eagles

The Fulton Steamers will face off against the Mercer County Golden Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Fulton barely beat Galena the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Steamers never let the Pirates get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory on Tuesday. The Steamers haven't had any issues with the Pirates recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.

Meanwhile, Mercer County put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. They skirted past Rockridge 10-8.

Alivia Gillespie was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Natalie Thomson was a standout: she went 1-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Maddy Campbell-Baker was another key player, going 3-for-5 with one home run and one stolen base.

Mercer County pushed their record up to 11-0 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Fulton, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

Fulton skirted past Mercer County 5-4 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Steamers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Golden Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
