Basketball Recap: Canyon Powers' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mainland over Dr. Phillips

Mainland easily dispatched Ocoee on Wednesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Buccaneers fell just short of the Dr. Phillips Panthers by a score of 51-48 on Friday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Buccaneers of the 58-57 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in November of 2023.

Mainland lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Canyon Powers, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten boards. He is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last six games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Beegie Gordon, who posted 12 points.

Having lost for the first time this season, Mainland fell to 2-1. As for Dr. Phillips, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.

Looking ahead, Mainland won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Wildwood at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Dr. Phillips, they and Winter Haven will face off at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest, having both just played.
