National Highlight Reel: James McAdoo sets Virginia basketball playoff tournament record

James McAdoo closed his brilliant career by scoring 19 points to lead Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, Va.) to a 59-45 victory over Middleburg Academy (Middleburg, Va.) and the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship.

During the evening he received three standing ovations, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

The highly regarded University of North Carolina recruit also left his mark in the semifinals by scoring a tournament-record 44 points during a 71-50 victory over Atlantic Shores (Chesapeake, Va.).

* High-scoring Poca (W.Va.) senior guard Jason Cuffee (6-4) has made a commitment to Wright State University, according to the Dayton Daily News.



* Sophomore sensation Aquille Carr poured in 43 points to lead once-beaten Patterson (Baltimore) to a 93-55 rout of Urbana (Ijamsville, Md.) and the Class 4A north regional championship.

* Wenonah (Birmingham, Ala.) overcame an 18-point deficit in the final 6:51 to nip No. 1-ranked defending champion Lee (Huntsville, Ala.), 89-85, for the Class 5A state title. A devastating press caused nine turnovers in the final quarter during which Wenonah had an amazing 43-23 scoring advantage.

* An autopsy revealed that Fennville (Mich.) basketball star Wes Leonard had an enlarged heart and died of cardiac arrest after making the winning shot last week.

* Sullivan (Ind.) junior Rhett Smith, who has committed to Indiana State University, scored 40 points during a 70-68 victory over Greencastle.

* Pikeville College signee Hobo McCoy scored 42 points to lead Pike County Central (Pikeville, Ky.) to a 63-58 victory over South Floyd (Hi Hat, Ky.).

* Senior Timmy Knipp (6-8), who has signed with Eastern Kentucky University, blocked 14 shots as Elliott County (Sandy Hook, Ky.) defeated Fleming County (Flemingsburg, Ky.), 80-69.



* Matt Schauss had 40 points — including 20 free throws — as Centerville (Ind.) defeated Eastern Hancock (Charlottesville, Ind.), 73-58.

* Western Michigan Christian (Muskegon, Mich.) defeated Covenant Christian (Grand Rapids, Mich.), 59-50, to give coach Jim Goorman his 500th victory.

Six-foot-eight Esko (Minn.) sophomore Savanna Trapp has blocked a state-record 190 shots this year. The record of 187 had stood since 1993. Her career total stands at 343, which gives her an eventual shot at the state record of 643.

* Standout junior guard Hayden Hamby of West Morgan (Trinity, Ala.) has made a commitment to Purdue University, according to the Decatur Daily. Hamby, who has 3,336 career points, averaged almost 33 points and 11 rebounds with a school-record 56-point game. She also had offers from Alabama, Memphis and St. Louis.

* Seward (Neb.) won its third consecutive Class B state title while extending its winning streak to 75 games. Read Dean Backes' Nebraska notebook for more on the Seward basketball team.

* Super sophomore Rebecca Greenwell amassed 41 points and 18 rebounds as Owensboro Catholic (Owensboro, Ky.) rolled past Meade County (Brandenburg, Ky.).



* Virgin Valley (Mesquite, Nev.) senior Rachel Morris (6-4), who has signed with the University of Utah, set a state record with 597 career blocked shots.

* Academy of the Holy Angels (Demarest, N.J.) shocked Immaculate Heart Academy (Washington Township, N.J.), 52-37, during the North Jersey Non-Public A playoffs – after losing four times to the same team throughout this season.

* Peyton Little – a junior committed to the University of Texas - scored a record 43 points to spark Wylie (Abilene, Texas) to a 66-58 victory over Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas) in the Class 3A state championship game. The previous title-game record of 42 had stood since 1979.

* Dave Preller, who has won more than 530 games and the 2003 Class 4A state title, will retire as head coach at Woodbury (Minn.) at the conclusion of this season.

Bill Belisle, the winningest hockey coach in USA history, posted victories No. 899 and 900 last week as Mount St. Charles Academy (Woonsocket, R.I.) defeated Smithfield (Esmond, R.I.) twice during the opening Division I state playoffs. The 81-year-old Belisle works with a co-coach with his son Dave, and is in his 36th year at the Mounties' helm.

* Warroad (Minn.) senior forward Karley Sylvester was named Miss Hockey after leading her team to its second consecutive Class A state title.



* Minnetonka (Minn.) senior Julie Friend was named Senior Goalie of the Year and also Associated Press Player of the Year. She posted 12 shutouts and a state-best 0.74 goals-against average.

FOOTBALL: DECKER PICKS NOTRE DAME
Butler (Vandalia, Ohio) junior offensive tackle Taylor Decker (6-8, 285) has made a commitment to the University of Notre Dame, according to the South Bend Tribune. He also had offers from Michigan, Wisconsin and Boston College.

* Steve Grady has come out of retirement to coach running backs and quarterbacks at Loyola (Los Angeles). Grady retired at Loyola in 2004 with a 269-77-6 record in 29 years.

GYMNASTICS: WIEBER, WILLIAMS WIN TITLES
DeWitt (Mich.) sophomore Jordyn Wieber won the women's all-around title during the AT&T American Cup in Jacksonville, Fla. In her senior level debut, Wieber had the day's top score on vault, balance beam and floor exercise to earn all-around honors with 59.899 points against top gymnasts from around the world.

* Linden (Mich.) freshman Grace Williams was all-around champion with 38.525 points during the second annual Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup in Jacksonville, Fla.

POTPOURRI
* Dallas Jesuit senior Jordan Spieth shot 10-under-par 206 to win the HP Boys Championship golf tournament by four strokes at The Woodlands, Texas. Spieth, who was second each of the previous two years, finished his AJGA career with five victories.



* Jessica Elliott struck out a school-record 19 batters while pitching Olympia (Orlando, Fla.) to a one-hit, 5-0 softball victory over Dr. Phillips (Orlando, Fla.).
