Baseball Game Preview: Campo Verde Coyotes vs. Chaparral Firebirds

The Campo Verde Coyotes are taking a road trip to square off against the Chaparral Firebirds at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Campo Verde is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.

While Campo Verde's win against Mesquite wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Coyotes skirted past the Wildcats 11-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Coyotes have posted against the Wildcats since April 21, 2017.

Jackson Weizel looked comfortable as he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ezekiel Zion, who fired off four doubles, four RBI, and one run while going 4-for-4. Those four doubles gave him a new career-high. John Heilman was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Campo Verde always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, after only one run in their last matchup, Chaparral made sure to put some runs up on the board against Saguaro on Monday. The Firebirds were the clear victors by a 10-4 margin over the Sabercats. Considering the Firebirds have won seven contests by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Chaparral has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Campo Verde, their record now sits at 12-8.

Campo Verde was able to grind out a solid victory over Chaparral when the teams last played back in May of 2017, winning 7-3. Do the Coyotes have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Firebirds turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
