Softball Game Preview: Coronado Thunderbirds vs. Socorro Bulldogs

Coronado hasn't had much luck against Socorro recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. Coronado will be playing in front of their home fans against Socorro at 9:00 a.m. Coronado has given up an average of 11.8 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Coronado is headed into Saturday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Friday. They came up short against Eastwood, falling 12-0.

Meanwhile, Socorro waltzed into their match on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Spartans a 10-0 shutout. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 16 games by six runs or more this season.

Haley Rodriguez made a splash no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI.

In other batting news, Leilene Cardoza was a standout: she scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Danna Guerrero, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs.

Socorro hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.

Socorro's victory bumped their record up to 21-1. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 9-17.
