Recap: Seymour Wildcats vs. Derby Red Raiders
The Seymour Wildcats had to kick off their season on the road on Wednesday, but they showed no ill effects. They breezed by Derby on the road to the tune of 63-34. Given Seymour's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 24th, while Derby is ranked 94th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Seymour can attribute much of their success to Skylar Barton, who scored 20 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Isabella Melissano, who scored 12 points along with five assists.
Despite the loss, Derby saw an underclassman step up: Shea Gray scored 22 points along with six rebounds.
Derby struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Seymour racked up 22 assists.
Seymour's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Derby, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-2.
Seymour won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Wolcott at 7:00 p.m. on December 14th. As for Derby, they will head out on the road to face off against Torrington at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Torrington focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Wednesday.
