Lower Moreland is 0-7 against Calvary Christian Academy since April of 2015 but things could change on Monday. The Lions will square off against the Cougars at 3:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Lower Moreland was handed a 16-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene last Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Abington 5-3. The Lions' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Maddie Menchhofer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Alexis MacPhee, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Those RBI marked the first that she has brought in this season. Another player making a difference was Izzy O'Brien, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Calvary Christian Academy and Delaware County Christian meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again last Tuesday. The Cougars blew past the Knights 24-12.
Leah Zweitzig was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Eva Buonopane, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Calvary Christian Academy's record now sits at 2-5-1. As for Lower Moreland, their win ended a seven-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-7.
Calvary Christian Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Lower Moreland has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Calvary Christian Academy, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4 strikeouts. Will Lower Moreland keep running through batters, or will the Cougars buck the trend?
Lower Moreland suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Calvary Christian Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2019. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
