Softball Game Preview: Villa Madonna Vikings vs. Newport Wildcats

Villa Madonna is a perfect 3-0 against Newport since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. Villa Madonna will head out to square off against Newport at 5:30 p.m. Villa Madonna is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.

Villa Madonna proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by 21) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over Bellevue.

Cam Kratzer made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Kratzer wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kate Gibbs, who went 2-for-4 with one double.

Meanwhile, Newport was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They came up short against Holmes, falling 28-10. One positive for the Wildcats, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Newport's loss dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Villa Madonna, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Villa Madonna took their win against Newport when the teams last played back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 19-4. Will Villa Madonna repeat their success, or does Newport has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
