Softball Game Preview: Sumrall Bobcats vs. North Pike Jaguars

The Sumrall Bobcats will head out to take on the North Pike Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sumrall is coming into the match hot, having won their last six games.

Sumrall is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Mississippi's top teams: Petal, who was ranked seventh at the time (Sumrall was ranked ninth). The Bobcats had just enough and edged out the Panthers 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Bobcats have posted since March 11th.

Kara Applewhite was incredible, going 1-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Mallory Pope, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when North Pike challenged Brookhaven on Tuesday. The Jaguars took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Panthers. The Jaguars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Ahlyana Houston was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Ellyn Williams, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.

Sumrall pushed their record up to 21-5 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for North Pike, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-15.

Sumrall came up short against North Pike in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 6-3. Can the Bobcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
