Basketball Recap: Waelder Wildcats vs. Austwell-Tivoli Redfish
Waelder was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 16th straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a blow against the Austwell-Tivoli Redfish, falling 88-8. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Redfish apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2021.
Austwell-Tivoli found their leader in freshman Mackenzi Cortez, who posted 39 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Cortez has scored at least a third of Austwell-Tivoli's points. Another player making a difference was Jazmyn Oviedo, who had 15 points.
Waelder's defeat dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Austwell-Tivoli, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 12-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Waelder will host Prairie Lea at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Waelder is facing Prairie Lea at the right time seeing as Prairie Lea is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Austwell-Tivoli, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Nordheim at 6:00 p.m. on January 14th.
